Welcome to Dymphna's Diary

Although I am not Catholic, I find it interesting that "Dymphna" is the patron saint of those who suffer from clinical depression and other mental illnesses. Considering the purpose of this site is to offer inspiration and spiritual guidance to my readers, I felt it was only right I chose her namesake for the title.

In 2010, this site was set up to pass along personal information about how depression has affected my life and the lives of my family. Since then, it has EVOLVED. In 2011, I attempted to present posts that were INSPIRATIONAL to you, my readers. In 2012, I went even deeper with personal stories from people across the United States via touching videos, songs, and interviews. My hope was to show each of you that even when you feel that you are in a situation that no one else could understand, you are not alone. Through it all, my comments have remained to be my personal opinions and spiritual reflections. I will continue to occasionally post information that I feel is beneficial in removing the stigma of mental illness, but regardless I feel blessed to have been given this platform to spread God's love and compassion for ALL people. I wouldn't be where I am today without the strength I receive daily from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. My hope is that this blog will help you find some comfort in your life. It most certainly is helping me find comfort in mine.

I want to make it perfectly clear, though, that when I make generalizations regarding mental illness, I am NOT giving advice to anyone. I'm just passing along information that I have found helpful in my life. I'm writing about MY PERSONAL experiences and thoughts. Mental illness affects everyone differently and your situation may not be reflective of mine.

Whom Shall I Fear

... with Love

"I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask, 'How many good things have you done in your life?' rather he will ask, 'How much love did you put into what you did?'"

The Colors of the Scriptures

Green – 2 Peter 3:18a - But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Yellow – John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Black – Romans 3:23 - … for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Red – 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 - For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
Purple – Acts 3:19 - Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.
White – 1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Blue – 1 John 3:24 - The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

A Little Child...

Matthew 18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

Starry Night

by Chris August

I'm giving my life to the only One
Who makes the moon reflect the sun
Every starry night
That was [God's*] design

I'm giving my life to the only Son
Who was and is and yet to come
Let the praises ring
'Cause [God's] everything

I'm giving my life to the only One
Who makes the moon reflect the sun
On that starry night
[God]  changed my life

*Because I try to include everyone in my posts, I've replaced "He" with God.  Some women (in cases of abuse, etc) may have a difficult time relating to a "male" God.

Feeling Alone?

If you ever feel alone, remember Isaiah 49:15-16

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
    I will not forget you!
 See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are ever before me."

Small Acts

“Do not think that love in order to be genuine has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.”

Hatchlings

"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird:

It would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg.
We are like eggs at present.
And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg.
We must be hatched or go bad."
C.S. Lewis quote

Isaiah 28b-31

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

Faith in Christ

“[To have Faith in Christ] means, of course, trying to do all that He says. There would be no sense in saying you trusted a person if you would not take his advice. Thus if you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in order to be saved, but because He has begun to save you already. Not hoping to get to Heaven as a reward for your actions, but inevitably wanting to act in a certain way because a first faint gleam of Heaven is already inside you.”
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Thank God

by Tumelo Makhudu
I am alive today!
I am blessed today
I am favored today
I am happy today
Thank God I can dream
Thank God I can sleep
Thank God I can scream
Thank God I can weep
Thank God I can express
My human nature to love
Thank God I can press
On to the price at the end of the race;
Thank God I can move
To the beat of my heart and dance
Thank God I can FORGIVE!
Thank God I can give
Thank GOD I can do all things!

Something to Say

Listen up, I got a question here,
Would anybody miss you if you disappeared?

Your life is the song that you sing
And the whole wide world is listening

Well the answer to the question is...
You were created, your life is a gift and
The lights are shining on you today, ‘cause

You got something to say
If you’re livin’, if you’re breathin’
You got something to say

And you know; if your heart is beatin’
You got something to say

And no one can say it like you do
God is love and love speaks through

You got it, you got it
You got something to say

and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any--lifted from the no
of all nothing--human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and

Amazing Grace

I was lost in the tragedy of life
Fear
Fear was my constant companion
Loneliness my friend

I struggled to accept myself
Who?
Who was I suppose to be?
A detailed self analysis

I didn't like the answers
Empty
My soul felt hollow, empty
How do I find comfort?

I dropped to my knees
Prayed
Prayed to Christ Jesus to save me
Enter my empty life

Acceptance was found
Peace
Peace in God's Compassion
Amazing Grace

Amen

Will Power

I was surfing today on Sirius Satellite radio and caught the tail-end of a talk show about "Will Power."  I heard an interesting thing about how the brain works...  Evidently, when we 'tell' ourselves that we are not going to do something, our brain automatically fixates on that something and wants to do it.

For instance, if I tell myself, "I am not going to eat any sweets today!", I will see & smell every sweet thing in my path during the next 24 hours.  Our brain thinks we are NEVER going to have anything sweet ever again and sets itself on a mission to correct that.

So, how do we combat our brains?  With our brains!

What if we got up in the morning and said and turned our NEGATIVE thoughts -  "I am not going to eat any sweets today!" into POSITIVE thoughts - "I can have a cookie, but I will eat something healthy from the all the other food groups first."  According to the radio, this technique works wonders.

I wonderwhat would happen if we used that type of POSITIVE reinforcement in other parts of our lives that we lack self-control?  Hmmm...

A New Year Prayer

Gracious God,
God of our yesterdays, our today, and our tomorrows.
We praise You for Your unequaled greatness.
Thank You for the year behind us and for the year ahead.
Help us in Your new year, Lord, to fret less and laugh more.
To teach our children to laugh by laughing with them.

To teach others to love by loving them.
Knowing, when Love came to the stable in Bethlehem, He came for us.
So that Love could be with us, and we could know You.
That we could share Love with others.
Help us, Blessed Savior, to hear Your love song in every sunrise,
in the chriping of sparrows in our backyards,
in the stories of our old folks, and the fantasies of our children.
Help us to stop and listen to Your love songs,

so that we may know You better and better.
We rejoice in the world You loved into being.
Thank You for another new year and for new chances every day.
We pray for peace, for light, and for hope, that we might spread them to others.

Forgive us for falling short this past year.
We leave the irreparable past in your hands, and step out into the unknown new year knowing You will go with us.
We accept Your gift of a new year and we rejoice in what's ahead, depending on You to help us do exactly what You want..
I say it again, we rejoice!
In Jesus name,
Amen.
